“Not a lot of people know this about me but I essentially grew up alone. Well, not completely alone. My parents were always out of the state for work. All I really had were nannies who would cook me dinner but honestly it wasn’t bad at all. I had a lot of freedom to do whatever I want and my parents would come home for the holidays. Despite that, we’ve definitely had our fair share of problems. My dad’s not the best husband to my mom so she would kind of treat me like her friend and come to me to rant and that’s really stressful as a kid but other than that, I’d say I have a very close relationship with my parents. I definitely think being alone, growing up without my parents in my life and siblings, attributed to my social anxiety and just being shy in general. I was really really shy. Here’s how shy I was! In high school, when somebody sat next to me and introduced themselves to me, I just would not respond to them. I was just too shy to speak up. It wasn’t out of a “Oh, I don’t like this person.” I genuinely was just too afraid. Now, I’m in a much better spot to speak out and voice my opinions but I’m definitely still working on myself one day at a time. - Helen Long, Nu Class | Humans of Psi
